Released Like the Bubbling Creek

3 min read

Fortunate to be spending my days surrounded by grasses and trees, I often feel a deep connection to nature and all its creatures. Exploring natural elements as part of my movement practice based on the Daoist principles of harmony has been a truly enriching experience. Seeking to move and be moved through life with the gentleness of water, energy of fire, playfulness of breeze, and stability of earth, nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration.

Often, it is in the silent embrace of nature that it’s easier to connect with the qualities of contentment and peace. I believe many of us have experienced going for a walk after a difficult conversation and returning with a clearer head. Walking up the hill always takes all my worries away. Perhaps that’s how some hills are created—human worries piled up. I bet the hill above my house is one meter higher after all my visits.

This might be why the following poem written by my dear teacher and friend, Ayyā Dhammadīpā, touches me. Full of beautiful natural imagery, it invites safety, joy, and calm. Maybe it will speak to you too.

I wish that we all will realize the importance of a healthy natural environment and treat it with the utmost respect. Maintaining balance is necessary for the well-being of all nature’s species, including ours.

Poem: Morning Prayer

May the pain of your life flow through you and beyond,
released like the bubbling creek smoothing all things in its path.
May the small beauties of your life fill you up,
like the rain and snow falling gently on the creek.
May you feel held by those who care about you,
steadied by the earthy banks of the creek
whose strength is in their intimacy.

A subtle ink painting of a winter creek with a few smaller spruces covered in snow on its banks.
